How 111 clocks came to keep Marfa time.
- 2026
It started with Memories.
An open source system MLow built to store a drawing program onchain: 612 directions in 87 families. The sun model inside Marfa Light was born there.
- September 2026
Twenty nine ways to tell the time.
Eight sundials built for latitude 30.3°, a nocturnal that reads the Big Dipper, and the rest keeping time by flaps, water, sand, words, gears, fire, wind and a Foucault pendulum. Each one stands somewhere real around Marfa.
- September 30
In dialogue with Art Blocks.
With written permission from Snowfro, Alexis André and Bryan Brinkman, the Chromie Squiggle and Friendship Bracelets run inside the clocks as credited homages.
- October 1
Proposed for four weeks in Marfa.
The series went to the Art Blocks x OpenSea Artist Residency with a plan: measure the real sky, check the dials against a real gnomon, and lock the series in the light it was written for.
- October 1
The calendar arrives.
Fireworks on the Fourth of July, a Hebrew calendar computed from the molad, Halloween pumpkins, solstice lines, and on Labor Day weekend the Marfa lights drifting over the horizon.
- October 6
Live on Ethereum.
Marfa Light became the first generative art project deployed on ABX on Ethereum. The script and three.js live onchain; the sale opened at 0.069 ETH.
- October 9
The lights move to measured bearings.
On this site, the Marfa lights now appear along the sight lines Zach Warren measured in his study of the phenomenon, credited in the code.
- October 22
Clocks for the people who shaped the work.
MLow gifted clocks to 54 artists and collectors, from Snowfro to the 6529 Museum. 69 of 111 are now keeping time; 42 are still waiting.
